For my research I will be gathering different film poster on different genres and analysing them and I will also be analysing different genre film trailers. By analysing moving images, this will help me to create a final idea. When doing this I will be looking at the different codes and conventions and how these are represented to its target audience. This will be to help me make a successful film trailer and film poster that uses the appropriate codes and conventions to reach out to my target audience and also, following the narrative of my chosen genre.
Primary research,
This involves me going out and collecting data instead of getting relevant research that has been done by another person.
By conducting a questionnaire this will help me who to target my film trailer at. From doing a questionnaire this can allow me to put all the information into graphs. I will be getting around 50- 60 people to fill them out which will give me more reliable data to represent the target audience. The questionnaire will have both quantitative and qualitative information that has open and closed questions.
I will also be doing focus groups which will consist of around 8- 10 people including males and females. The focus group will take place in the college as it is a safe environment.
Secondary research,
For my secondary research I will be looking at similar websites, film posters and film trailers. Within this I will be analysing the codes and conventions and mode of address. This will therefore help me how to approach my target audience successfully using the correct codes and conventions. When analysing the film trailers I will also be looking at the sound to see how it is addressed to its audience and how it is represented to its audience including the gender, age and class. Secondary research is reliable as it obtains true results of the thing you are researching.
· Advantages of quantitative research,
From using quantitative research it is quick to gather and collect information and also it collects information from a large portion of people. This will be my questionnaires and focus groups. It is also less time consuming and easy to read as it is usually statistics and numerical data.
· Disadvantages of quantitative research,
Disadvantages from using quantitative research is that people that are answering the questionnaire may just put down any answer and the researcher may not know if the answer is correct. So this questions the validity of the research. Also, statistics are changing all the time so therefore, the data can not always be correct.
· Advantages of qualitative research,
Advantages of using qualitative research are that it provides rich data through direct interaction between interviewer and participants. Also participants are not required to answer every question and are able to build on one another’s response. Also, it enables the researcher to collect any emotional feelings the person may be feeling. There fore, it provides the researcher with a more valid picture of the situation they are researching.
· Disadvantages of qualitative research,
Disadvantages of using qualitative research is that people may become influenced by dominate participants. And also the environment may influence the responses that are given. It is also very time consuming when analysing in depth interviews and questionnaires. Even though qualitative research is valid, it is not as reliable
